how to change can-am defender belt without tool

Changing the belt on a Can-Am Defender without a specialized tool can be challenging, but it’s possible with some basic tools and a bit of patience. Here’s a general guide on how to change the belt on a Can-Am Defender without a specialized tool:

Materials Needed:

  • New drive belt (ensure it’s the correct size and type for your Can-Am Defender model)
  • Socket wrench and socket set
  • Pliers
  • Screwdriver or pry bar
  • Block of wood or similar object
  • Work gloves

Steps:

  1. Safety Precautions:
    • Park your Can-Am Defender on a level surface and engage the parking brake. Ensure the vehicle is in gear (for manual transmission) or in “Park” (for automatic transmission).
  2. Access the Belt Housing:
    • Locate the belt housing cover on the side of the vehicle. Depending on the Defender model, it may be on the driver’s or passenger’s side.
  3. Remove the Belt Housing Cover:
    • Use a socket wrench and the appropriate socket to remove the bolts securing the belt housing cover. Keep the bolts in a safe place as you will need them later.
  4. Release Belt Tension:
    • To release tension on the old belt, you can use a combination of pliers, a screwdriver, or a pry bar. Be cautious and wear work gloves to protect your hands.
    • Insert a screwdriver or pry bar between the sheaves (pulleys) of the driven clutch to spread them apart slightly. This will relieve tension on the belt.
    • Use pliers to carefully pull the old belt from the sheaves. Work the belt off the driven clutch carefully to avoid damaging it.
  5. Remove the Old Belt:
    • Once the belt is free from the driven clutch, carefully slide it out from the engine pulley as well.
  6. Install the New Belt:
    • Begin by threading the new drive belt over the engine pulley. Ensure it is properly seated on the pulley and sits evenly.
    • Next, slide the other end of the new belt onto the driven clutch sheaves. Again, make sure it’s seated properly and evenly.
    • Be patient during this step, as getting the belt onto the clutch sheaves can be a bit challenging without a specialized tool.
  7. Reset Belt Tension:
    • Remove the screwdriver or pry bar from between the clutch sheaves. The belt should now be under tension.
  8. Replace the Belt Housing Cover:
    • Position the belt housing cover back over the belt and secure it in place using the bolts you removed earlier. Tighten the bolts securely.
  9. Test the Belt:
    • Start the engine and engage the transmission to ensure the new belt is functioning correctly. Listen for any unusual noises or vibrations.
  10. Check for Proper Alignment:
    • Make sure the belt is properly aligned and seated in the pulleys. The belt should run smoothly without any wobbling or slipping.
  11. Take a Test Drive:
    • Go for a short test drive to confirm that the belt operates correctly under load. Pay attention to the vehicle’s performance and any signs of belt slippage.

Please note that changing the belt on a Can-Am Defender without a specialized tool may require more effort and care than using the recommended tool. If you’re uncomfortable with this process or encounter difficulties, it’s advisable to consult your Can-Am dealer or a professional mechanic for assistance. Additionally, refer to your vehicle’s manual for specific instructions and torque specifications.
