Changing the filament mid-print on an Ender 3 Pro or any 3D printer requires a bit of manual intervention and precision. Here are the steps to change the filament during a print on your Ender 3 Pro:

Materials Needed:

  • New filament spool
  • Ender 3 Pro 3D printer
  • Tweezers or needle-nose pliers
  • Patience

Steps:

  1. Pause the Print:
    • When you want to change the filament during a print, pause the print job using the printer’s control menu. Most 3D printers, including the Ender 3 Pro, have a pause or pause/resume function.
  2. Manually Move the Hotend:
    • After pausing the print, the nozzle will stay in its current position. You’ll need to move the nozzle to a safe location where it won’t interfere with the print or the bed.
    • Use the printer’s control menu to manually move the nozzle. Move it up and to the side, away from the printed object.
  3. Retract the Old Filament:
    • In the control menu, look for an option to manually retract the filament. This option is typically labeled “Retract” or “Extruder” and allows you to reverse the filament flow.
    • Retract the old filament until it is no longer coming out of the nozzle. You may need to assist by gently pulling the filament with tweezers or pliers as it retracts.
  4. Cut the Old Filament:
    • Once the old filament has been retracted and is no longer visible at the nozzle, use scissors or diagonal cutters to cut off the end of the filament, leaving a clean tip.
  5. Load the New Filament:
    • Take the new filament spool and trim the end to create a clean, pointed tip.
    • Feed the new filament into the extruder and use the control menu to manually extrude it until you see the new filament flowing smoothly from the nozzle.
  6. Resume the Print:
    • Once you are confident that the new filament is extruding properly and there are no issues, resume the print job using the control menu.
  7. Monitor the Print:
    • Keep an eye on the print for the next few layers to ensure that the new filament is being used correctly and that there are no issues with the print quality.

By following these steps, you can successfully change the filament mid-print on your Ender 3 Pro. It may take a bit of practice to get the hang of it, so don’t worry if your first attempt isn’t perfect. Over time, you’ll become more skilled at this technique and be able to change filament seamlessly during your 3D printing projects.
