how to catch gizzard shad on rod and reel

Catching gizzard shad on a rod and reel can be an effective way to use them as bait for larger game fish. Here’s a guide on how to catch gizzard shad using a rod and reel:

Materials Needed:

  • Fishing rod and reel (medium to medium-heavy action)
  • Monofilament or braided fishing line (8-20 lb test)
  • Baitcasting or spinning reel
  • Size 4 to 8 bait hooks
  • Bait (dough balls, bread, small pieces of shrimp, or commercial fish bait)
  • Small split shot sinkers
  • Fishing bobber (optional)
  • Landing net (recommended for handling shad)
  • Polarized sunglasses (to help spot shad in the water)

Steps:

  1. Choose the Right Location:
    • Look for areas where gizzard shad are known to gather. These fish often congregate in shallower areas near the surface, especially during their spawning season.
  2. Select the Right Time:
    • Gizzard shad are more active during warmer months and during dawn and dusk. Plan your fishing trip accordingly.
  3. Prepare Your Gear:
    • Ensure your fishing rod and reel are in good working condition.
    • Attach a baitcasting or spinning reel to your rod.
    • Spool your reel with the appropriate fishing line (8-20 lb test).
    • Tie a size 4 to 8 bait hook to your line using your preferred fishing knot.
  4. Prepare Your Bait:
    • Gizzard shad are filter feeders and eat small particles in the water. Use bait like dough balls, bread, small pieces of shrimp, or commercial fish bait.
    • Mold the bait into small balls around your hook, making sure it covers the hook entirely.
  5. Add Split Shot Sinkers:
    • Place one or two small split shot sinkers about 12-18 inches above your hook. This helps your bait sink and stay at the right depth.
  6. Optional: Use a Bobber (Float):
    • If you want to keep your bait suspended at a specific depth, attach a fishing bobber (float) above the split shot sinkers.
  7. Cast and Retrieve:
    • Cast your baited hook into the area where you’ve spotted gizzard shad or where you suspect they might be.
    • Let your bait sink to the desired depth (usually near the surface).
    • Slowly retrieve your bait while gently twitching the rod to mimic the movement of small particles in the water. Gizzard shad are attracted to this motion.
  8. Observe and Set the Hook:
    • Watch for any signs of fish activity or nibbles on your line.
    • When you feel a bite or see your line move, set the hook by giving a quick and firm upward motion with your rod.
  9. Reel in the Shad:
    • Once you’ve hooked a gizzard shad, reel it in carefully.
    • Use a landing net to scoop up the shad, as they can be slippery and difficult to handle.
  10. Handle Gizzard Shad with Care:
    • Gizzard shad are fragile fish. Handle them gently to minimize injury or stress.
    • If you plan to use them as bait, place them in a bait bucket or container with aerated water to keep them alive and healthy.

Remember to check local fishing regulations and size limits, as well as any specific rules related to catching gizzard shad, in your area. Additionally, always practice ethical angling by releasing any fish you don’t plan to use as bait or keep for consumption.
