how to center glock rear sight

To center a Glock rear sight, you’ll need some basic tools and follow a few simple steps. Centering the rear sight ensures that it is properly aligned with the front sight, which is crucial for accurate shooting. Here’s a step-by-step guide:

Tools and Materials Needed:

  • Glock handgun
  • Appropriate safety gear, such as safety glasses
  • Glock rear sight adjustment tool (recommended, but not necessary)
  • Hammer and punch (or Glock front sight tool)
  • Target and a safe shooting environment for testing

Steps:

  1. Safety First:
    • Ensure the Glock handgun is unloaded. Remove the magazine and visually and physically inspect the chamber to make sure there’s no ammunition present.
  2. Prepare the Handgun:
    • If you have a Glock rear sight adjustment tool, follow the manufacturer’s instructions for attaching it to the rear sight.
    • If you don’t have a sight tool, you can use a hammer and punch or a Glock front sight tool. However, be very careful not to damage the sight or the slide.
  3. Center the Rear Sight Horizontally:
    • If your Glock is shooting to the left, you’ll need to move the rear sight to the right to center it.
    • If it’s shooting to the right, you’ll move the rear sight to the left.
    • To do this, use the appropriate tool to apply gentle pressure to the rear sight in the desired direction. Glock sights have a dovetail design, so you’ll need to drift the sight in the dovetail cut on the slide.
    • Make small adjustments and check the alignment frequently.
  4. Center the Rear Sight Vertically:
    • To center the rear sight vertically, you’ll want to adjust it so that it aligns properly with the front sight post.
    • If your shots are consistently hitting high, lower the rear sight by gently tapping it down.
    • If your shots are consistently hitting low, raise the rear sight by tapping it up.
    • Again, make small adjustments and check the alignment frequently.
  5. Test Fire:
    • After making your adjustments, it’s important to test fire the handgun to ensure it’s now shooting accurately. Do this in a safe shooting environment.
    • Fire a few rounds at your target and assess where they hit in relation to the point of aim. Make further adjustments if necessary.
  6. Lock the Sight in Place:
    • Once you’ve centered the rear sight to your satisfaction and verified its accuracy through test firing, it’s a good practice to secure it in place.
    • Use a small drop of thread-locking compound (e.g., Loctite) on the threads of the sight screw (if applicable) to prevent it from coming loose due to recoil.
  7. Final Check:
    • Before considering the sight adjustment complete, verify the handgun’s accuracy again by shooting a few more rounds.

Please note that sight adjustment can be a delicate process, and it’s crucial to take your time and make small adjustments. If you’re not comfortable doing this yourself, it’s a good idea to seek the assistance of a professional gunsmith, especially if you’re using a valuable or collectible firearm. Additionally, always follow firearm safety rules and guidelines when handling and shooting handguns.
